One question that we hear from customers from time to time is this: “What is the difference between interior renovation, and remodeling?” That’s a good question. While the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they don’t mean exactly the same thing. We can answer this, since we do both type of jobs.
A remodeling job, such as a kitchen or bathroom, is essentially making a space look new through the use of new cabinets, new appliances, new sink or tub, etc. The space is the same, but with more updated components.
An interior renovation generally means a more in-depth type of project. It often involves tearing down parts of the current structure and rebuilding. The term “gutting” may be appropriate for parts of the project. It just involves more substantial changes to the home.
Some ideas for your interior renovation project:
- Divide into multiple rooms – Your home may have a room that is really larger than what you use it for. In some houses, the original builder included a “great room” that included a lot of open space. Many times, this is one of the big selling points of a home because it has that “open” feel. However, you might have a much better use for two rooms instead of one; we can make that one big room into two (or more) smaller rooms through an interior renovation.
- Change a staircase – Homeowners sometimes love the grand old-fashioned staircase designs that were standard is some of the larger vintage homes. However, if you are modernizing a house like this, an old staircase may not fit in with the rest of the décor. No problem! We can remove the old staircase and install a new one – and there are many designs from which you can choose.
- Add natural lighting – Is your house too dark? Do you prefer to light the house during the day with natural sunlight, rather than have electrical lights on in each room? That’s an issue that can be solved by adding more (or larger) windows. Or, what many homeowners are doing now is adding a skylight in many or all of the rooms of the home. You will love the new natural lighting throughout your home!
- Whole house flooring – If your home was built back in the 50s or 60s or 70s, the popular style was to have carpeting throughout. It is unlikely that you would still have the original carpeting from back then, but maybe you have just replaced old carpet with new through the years. A popular trend now is to take out all the carpet and install beautiful hardwood floors. You will be amazed with this wonderful new change.
- Your ideas – You may have some interior renovation ideas of your own – let’s talk about them! We would love to hear what you have in mind, and perhaps can offer some suggestions based on our experience.
